Families who have children and young people with special needs often deal with similar challenges. They may have concerns about education, services, therapies, respite and other issues directly related to their child. With your help the Special Educational Needs Families Support Group in the UK.

The charity was created by parents who have children with special needs 21 years ago.  We will help other families who have children with any kind of special need, to realise that they are not alone.

There are 7.3 million children in the very complex state education system. When problems arise within it, children and their families can suffer great distress. We provide free advice and information to parents, carers and young people each year, dealing with issues such as special educational needs, exclusion, bullying and admissions, disability’s, mental health ,behaviour issues, family problems .  With your help we will ensure that all families have access to expert advice and support when they need it.

• Families will access to a confidential telephone helpline
• impartial information and advice around SEN issues
• support in preparing for and attending meetings
• help in filling in forms and writing letters/reports
• initial support in resolving disagreements with your child’s school and the LA
• contact details for other statutory and voluntary services
• links to local parent support groups and forums
• the chance to submit your views, which will help inform and influence local policy and practice
• training opportunities

Volunteers warmly welcome

Our charity works in depth with young people and adults with special needs. We also support families of children with complex difficulties. We are seeking motivated hardworking and committed volunteers to help support families and the infrastructure of the Special Needs Family Support Group. If you have some time to spare please consider becoming a valued team member, that will gain many new skills make long term friends and have fun knowing that you are helping to change the lives of vulnerable people.

This is a small example of tasks that volunteers can become involved with:

•         Research into special needs
•         Publicity and promotion materials
•         Information fact sheets for clients and professionals
•         Monitoring and evaluating the service
•         Organising social activities
•         Fundraising
•         Mentoring clients
•         Networking
•         Providing quality information and advice

We will provide taster sessions to all new potential volunteers, at a time and venue to meet your needs. Each potential volunteer will be asked to provide references, also volunteers expressing an interest in working directly with the young people and vulnerable adults will be required to have an enhanced CRB disclosure.
